What an EV charger installation costs in Sydney

Your exact price, before you speak to anyone

From $800 — install only, charger supplied by you. Single-phase, single storey, parking within about 5m of your switchboard.

Most single-storey Sydney homes with the parking spot within 15m of the switchboard land between $800 and $1,200. Three-phase, a double-storey cable run or an open driveway add to that. If you'd like us to supply the charger, a standard 7kW smart unit adds $900.

Your price includes a dedicated circuit, safety switch, wall-mounted installation, commissioning and workmanship warranty — performed by a licensed electrician to AS/NZS 3000, with the whole project managed for you.

What Ausgrid actually requires (and what you've probably read that's wrong)

If you've been reading up on this, you've likely seen a confident claim that NSW requires demand response or load management on any charger above 20 amps single-phase.

We went looking for that rule and couldn't find it. Ausgrid publishes no amp or kilowatt threshold for home EV chargers. What Ausgrid actually says is that "depending on the type and nature of the installation, you may be required to notify Ausgrid before installing so that we can assess the impact it may have on the grid," and that your licensed electrical contractor "can advise if a connection application is required to be submitted to Ausgrid for approval."

In other words: there's no universal number. It's a judgement your licensed electrician makes about your specific property. Where they identify that your supply needs upgrading to take the new load, a connection application goes to Ausgrid so they can assess it.

We mention this because it's the sort of thing that gets repeated until it sounds official. If an installer quotes you extra for mandatory load management on a standard 7kW single-phase charger, it's fair to ask them which published rule they're referring to.

Sydney is served by three distributors — Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Essential Energy — and which one covers you depends on your address. Your electrician deals with them.

Living in an apartment or a strata building?

This is the part that stops most Sydney EV owners, and it's more solvable than it looks.

Under the Strata Schemes Management Act 2015, EV charging infrastructure is treated as sustainability infrastructure — a category created specifically to make upgrades like this easier to get through an owners corporation than a standard major-works approval.

Before the owners corporation resolves on it, section 132B requires them to consider the cost (including running and maintenance costs), who will own, install and maintain the equipment, and how far its use will be available to other lots in the scheme.

The NSW Government publishes model motions and by-laws for the three common situations — works for a single lot, owners corporation installation and management, and managing an installation that already exists. Taking those to your strata manager is usually a faster path than starting from scratch.

Your CCEW, handled

Every electrical installation in NSW needs a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. Your licensed electrician issues it, and it's the document proving the work was tested and complies with the Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Regulation 2018 and AS/NZS 3000.

One correction worth making, because a lot of pages still say otherwise: CCEWs now go to Building Commission NSW through its eCert portal — not NSW Fair Trading. Your electrician must submit it as soon as practical and no later than seven days after completing the electrical test, and copies flow to your distributor and to you.
