Of these, the charger unit ($500–$1,300 for a 7 kW charger) and labour ($300–$2,500) are the biggest line items on a standard job. The very cheapest installs use a basic unit and minimal labour.

Single-phase vs three-phase: which do you need, and what's the cost difference?

Most homes only need a single-phase 7 kW charger, which adds roughly 40 km of range per hour — plenty for overnight charging. A three-phase charger (11–22 kW) charges far faster but only helps if your home already has three-phase supply and you drive high daily distances.

If you don't have three-phase supply, upgrading to it purely for charging is rarely worth it — it can cost $3,000–$8,000 depending on distance to the street transformer and your network operator's requirements.

How much does it cost to install a Tesla Wall Connector?

The Tesla Wall Connector unit costs around $750–$800, and a straightforward install adds roughly $300–$700 on top — so most standard Tesla Wall Connector installations land at $1,500–$2,000 all in. A long cable run, trenching or a switchboard upgrade can push a complex job to $2,500–$3,000.

The Wall Connector is a hardwired charger, so it must be installed by a licensed electrician — it's not a plug-in unit. The same cost logic applies to other premium 7 kW chargers (Wallbox, Zappi, and similar): the unit is a minor part of the total; the site conditions decide the final price.

Will I need a switchboard upgrade? (the hidden cost)

You may need a switchboard upgrade if your board is old (ceramic fuses), full, or lacks spare capacity for a dedicated 32 A circuit. It's the most common "surprise" cost, typically $1,200–$2,500. A licensed installer confirms whether it's needed only after inspecting your board.

Why do quotes vary so much for the same job? Am I being ripped off?

Quotes for the same charger and home can differ by $1,000 or more — usually because installers assume different cable runs, circuit protection and switchboard work, or because some pad the price. The fix is comparing like-for-like quotes on the same scope. A higher quote isn't automatically a rip-off; a vague one usually is.

This is the number-one thing Australians worry about, and it's fair. Here's how to read a quote:

Three things you'll read about EV charger costs that aren't true

We went to the regulators and distributors directly to write this guide. Three claims that appear on a lot of Australian EV charger pages didn't survive that check.

"NSW requires load management on any charger above 20 amps."

Ausgrid publishes no amp or kilowatt threshold for home EV chargers at all. Its published position is that depending on the installation you may need to notify them, and that your licensed electrical contractor advises whether a connection application is required. If an installer adds a line item for mandatory load management on a standard 7kW single-phase charger, it's fair to ask which published rule they mean. (Queensland is different — Energex does publish an over-20A rule, which we cover in our Queensland guide.)

"Your certificate goes to NSW Fair Trading."

Not any more. In NSW a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work is submitted to Building Commission NSW through its eCert portal, no later than seven days after the electrical test.

"Victorian inspections happen within eight business days."

Energy Safe Victoria's actual rule is different, and it matters more than the timeframe. Work on your switchboard, consumer mains or earthing system is prescribed work, and prescribed work must be inspected by an independent licensed electrical inspector before it can be connected to the electricity supply. Certificate copies go out within 16 calendar days. A straightforward charger circuit is non-prescribed, and its certificate copies go out within one month.

What it costs in Melbourne

Melbourne installs start at the same $800 base. What's specific to Victoria is what happens if your switchboard needs work.

Energy Safe Victoria classes switchboards, consumer mains and earthing systems as prescribed electrical installation work. Prescribed work must be inspected by an independent licensed electrical inspector before your supply can be reconnected — an extra step, and an extra cost, that a straightforward charger circuit doesn't carry. It's the real reason nobody can price a switchboard upgrade over the phone.

Victoria has five electricity distributors — CitiPower, Powercor, Jemena, AusNet Services and United Energy — and they connect installations under the Victorian Service and Installation Rules (current edition: May 2026). Your electrician handles whichever one covers your address.

What it costs in Sydney

Sydney installs start at the same $800 base, and the two things that most often change the number are supply capacity and strata.

On supply: there's no published Ausgrid threshold that automatically triggers an upgrade. Your licensed electrician assesses your property, and where they identify that your supply needs upgrading for the extra load, a connection application goes to Ausgrid to assess it. Sydney is served by three distributors — Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Essential Energy.

On strata: EV charging is treated as sustainability infrastructure under the Strata Schemes Management Act 2015, and section 132B sets out what the owners corporation must consider — cost including running and maintenance, who owns and maintains the equipment, and how far its use is available to other lots. The NSW Government publishes model motions and by-laws, which is usually a faster starting point than drafting from scratch. Confirm current requirements with your strata manager.

Are there rebates for home EV charger installation?

Some Australian states offer rebates or incentives that can reduce the cost of a home charger or its installation, but availability and eligibility change over time and vary by state. Always check your current state government and network programs — a rebate is never guaranteed and conditions apply.

How to bring the cost down

None of these are tricks, and none of them involve cutting corners on the electrical work.

Shorten the cable run. Distance is the single biggest lever you control. A charger mounted near the switchboard costs less than one at the far end of the property. If you have a choice of wall, walk the route before you book.

Supply your own charger. Hardware and installation are separate costs. If you've already bought a unit, or you'd rather choose your own, you only pay for the install.

Don't buy three-phase you won't use. Three-phase costs more to install and only helps if your home already has three-phase supply and your car can take the extra rate. A 7kW charger overnight covers far more driving than most people expect. Have your electrician confirm your actual supply before you spend money on capability you can't use.

Check what your electricity plan does overnight. Charging cost is separate from installation cost, and the rate you charge at overnight makes a bigger difference to what you spend over a year than a few hundred dollars on the install.

How long does it take?

We're not going to quote you a number of hours, because the honest answer is that it depends on things nobody can see from a questionnaire — the cable route, the state of your switchboard, and whether the job needs an inspection before it can be energised.
